Call for Papers

Cavendish Journal of Social Sciences and Management (CJSSM) was initially launched in the second quarter of 2018 and revived in October this year 2021.  The aim of the Journal is to promote a culture of writing and intellectual vibrancy within the University by publishing high-quality papers written by University staff and/or postgraduate students. The papers may be based on empirical research, secondary data analysis, ongoing or completed projects, discussion papers or policy appraisals utilising literature review. Publication of papers in the CJSSM is by no means intended to replace or compete with publications in other peer reviewed journals. Rather, they are meant to encourage such publications and may be seen as a ‘stepping stone’ in this process.  The CJSSM serves to publicise the work of the academic staff and postgraduate students within CUU.

Themes for CJSSM

The six themes outlined below summarise the focus of the current call for papers. The first five of these themes reflect the academic disciplines within CUU. The last theme – General / miscellaneous – is meant to take care of other important issues that are of academic or intellectual import but fall outside the main disciplines within CUU. The six themes are:

  • Business and Management
  • Social Economic Sciences
  • Computer Science and Information Technology
  • Public and Environmental Health
  • Law and Jurisprudence
  • General / miscellaneous

Types of submissions

Intending authors may make submissions of manuscripts that fall into any of the following categories of papers:

  • Empirical/research paper
  • Secondary data analysis paper
  • Discussion paper
  • Concept paper
  • Policy/book review
  • Report e.g. project, consultancy, evaluation, technical etc.

CUU academic staff engaged in student supervision for research and internship are encouraged to consider working with their supervisees to write papers for publication in the CUU-OPS.

Submission guidelines

Intending Authors should submit papers electronically to the Editor-in-Chief of the CJSSM at cjssm@cavendish.ac.ug for review.  These will arrange to get appropriate authorities and experts to undertake the review process and provide feedback.

Each submitted paper should be supported by a brief statement of its contribution to one of the four thematic areas (see above) of CUU activity – i.e. what the paper adds to the subject area, the type of paper submitted (e.g. research, discussion, report etc.), and: a brief abstract (purpose, methods, results, conclusion) for research study submissions; a ‘main message’ synopsis for reports; and a paragraph stating ‘current relevance’ for discussion papers.

Papers should not exceed 6000 words in length; however, it is recognised that the nature and content of the submitted paper may justify a longer length in certain circumstances.  Where a submission exceeds the recommended word limit, the authors are required to provide a brief justification of this for consideration by the Editorial Committee. Each paper submitted must also clearly state the following:

  • List of authors and collaborating institutions where relevant
  • Acknowledgement of funding source if relevant
  • Details of ethical approval if relevant
  • References to related published papers that you may have published, if any
  • A word count for the main text (excluding references, tables and diagrams)

Papers should be written using Microsoft WORD and the author(s) must make sure that they have undertaken all spelling and grammar checks before submitting the papers.  The CJSSM will be published on the CUU website with a pdf file download option.  All published papers will automatically be added to a catalogue of (previous) papers available both online and as hard-copy supplement to various promotional CUU material. Finally, authors of occasional papers should be willing to make seminal presentations to an intellectual audience for discussion and feedback before having them published as a way of improving quality.
